How to Use Shared Albums (iPhone and Android – Native Options)

Shared albums are perfect for trips, family events, birthdays, and kids’ activities—everyone adds their photos into one shared space.

iPhone (Apple Photos + iCloud Shared Albums)

This is Apple’s built-in shared album feature.

Before you start (one-time check):

  1. Go to Settings → tap your name → iCloud

  2. Tap Photos

  3. Turn on iCloud Photos

  4. Turn on Shared Albums

Create and share a Shared Album:

  1. Open Photos

  2. Tap Albums → tap + (top left) → New Shared Album

  3. Name the album (example: “Christmas 2026”)

  4. Invite people (phone number or email tied to their Apple ID)

  5. Tap Create

  6. Add photos/videos, then tap Done

Let others add photos too:

  1. Open the shared album

  2. Tap the people icon (or Shared Album Details)

  3. Turn on Subscribers Can Post

Tip: Everyone you invite needs an Apple ID to fully participate.

Android (Google Photos – built in on most Android phones)

On Android, the “native” photos app experience is typically Google Photos, and it’s the standard built-in option on most devices.

Before you start (one-time check):

  1. Open Google Photos

  2. Tap your profile icon → confirm you’re signed in

  3. (Optional) Turn on Backup so photos are saved and easier to share

Create and share an album:

  1. Open Google Photos

  2. Tap LibraryAlbumsCreate album

  3. Name the album

  4. Tap Add photos

  5. Tap Share (or Invite) and choose a contact, email, or Get link

Let others add photos too:

  • When sharing, make sure Collaborate is enabled (wording varies slightly by version)

  • If you share a link, anyone with the link may be able to view/join depending on your settings—use link sharing carefully
