Spam Calls: How They’re Filtered and How You Can Block Them

If it feels like robocalls and spam calls are getting worse—you’re right. Spam calls now account for billions of calls every month in the U.S. alone.

But your phone company is doing something about it—and so can you.

📞 What Is a Spam or Scam Call?

These are calls made by robots, spoofed numbers, or fraudsters pretending to be someone they’re not—like the IRS, Amazon, or your bank.

They fall into two big categories:

  • Spam/Robocalls: Unwanted marketing or political calls

  • Scam Calls: Designed to trick you into giving up money or personal info

📡 How Phone Carriers Filter Them

Your wireless provider plays a big role in blocking spam before it reaches your phone. They use:

🧠 1. Call Filtering Algorithms

Carriers monitor massive patterns of call behavior:

  • If a number makes thousands of calls per hour, it’s flagged

  • If many users report a number, it goes on a block list

  • Suspicious caller ID behavior (like spoofing your area code) is tracked

🛡 2. STIR/SHAKEN Protocols

This system verifies if a call really comes from the number displayed on your screen. If not, it’s marked as “Spam Risk” or blocked entirely.

📱 3. Network-Level Blocking

Major carriers block millions of calls before they ever ring your phone.

🔢 How Many Spam Calls Are Out There?

  • Over 50 billion robocalls were made in the U.S. in 2023

  • Some users receive 5–10 spam calls per day

  • Carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile each block or label billions of calls monthly

🚫 How You Can Prevent Scam Calls

✅ 1. Turn on Your Carrier’s Free Tools

  • Verizon: Call Filter (free basic version)

  • AT&T: ActiveArmor

  • T-Mobile: Scam Shield

These label or block likely spam calls and let you report numbers.

📲 2. Use a Third-Party Robocall Blocker App

Apps that help take things further:

  • RoboKiller – Blocks robocalls and lets you play “answer bots”

There are others, but this app is the only one I have any experience with, thus the only suggestion I feel comfortable giving.

⚙️ 3. Enable “Silence Unknown Callers” (iPhone Only)

Go to:
Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers
This sends calls from people not in your contacts straight to voicemail (great option if you don’t mind screening).

📵 4. Manually Block Numbers

After a spam call:

  • Tap the ⓘ icon next to the number > Block this Caller

  • (for SMS messages) delete the text > report as spam

📵 5. DO NOT ANSWER SPAM CALLS

Do not answer calls that you suspect of spam:

  • A lot of these calls are just an attempt to see if you are a live number.

  • If you answer the call, that may lead to more calls as you have confirmed you numbers is active

🧠 Final Tips

  • Don’t answer numbers you don’t recognize. If it’s important, they’ll leave a voicemail.

  • Never say “yes” or provide info during a suspicious call—some scammers record responses.

  • Report spam calls to your carrier or at donotcall.gov

  • Register your number on the National Do Not Call Registry—it won’t block everything, but it helps reduce legit telemarketing calls.

🔐 Bottom Line

Spam calls are a nuisance, but you have real tools to fight back:

  • Use your carrier’s free filters

  • Add a robocall blocker app if needed

  • Adjust your phone settings to stop unknowns cold

Take a few minutes now, and your phone will stay a lot quieter later.
